Public involvement is a priority for this Program

Over the course of this modernization and safety Program, we will continue to prioritize public involvement by meeting with stakeholders and community organizations as well as hosting in-person and virtual Public Information Centers (PIC). PICs are different from official public hearings, which include a formal public comment portion. Instead, PICs provide an open house format to encourage greater engagement, dialogue, and interactivity. They include a brief presentation and opportunities for community residents to directly ask questions, comment, and speak one-on-one with Turnpike Authority officials and members of the Program team.

Our initial in-person PICs for the first project of the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension Improvements Program took place in 2024 in the cities of Newark, Bayonne, and Jersey City. There were information stations around the room for community residents to learn more about the first project and the overall Program. Although the first round of PICs has concluded, community outreach will continue throughout the entire Program.

Accessibility, Equity, and Inclusivity

The communities surrounding the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension are some of the most diverse in the nation with multiple languages spoken. Inclusive and equitable outreach is a top priority of this modernization and safety Program. To this end, all of our PICs and public meetings included local interpreters. In addition, the Fact Sheets for the Program and first project are available in multiple languages. This website also translates into multiple languages using the drop-down feature in the upper right corner.

This Program is also committed to benefiting the economies of the surrounding communities by hiring local residents and partnering with small businesses. To learn more, visit our Opportunities page.

Thank you to the local Essex and Hudson County small businesses FastSigns of Newark, Haas Media LLC, RyArMo Photography, RB’s Rubber Stamps, The Print Post, Royal Printing Services, and Citiview Audio Visual for the services they provided for the PICs in Newark, Bayonne, and Jersey City.
